Making Money Online & Offline
Your Website
Ahhhhh my specialty. You're website is your chance to give any impression to the visitor you want. You provide them a channel to see the full range of your services at their own pace, every minute of every day of every year.
While it need only be very basic initially, a professional website domain name and email address convey to your existing and potential clients you are serious. Every industry, every product, every service, and every organisation can benefit from a website. They are not "just for show" they are business tools, and very powerful ones at that.
Get a professional developer (not a high school kid) to build you even a very basic site initially. As you business grows so can your website, but in the very least provide a rundown of your basic services and contact information. Your business card then effectively expands to a 300 page document of information just with that little domain name running across the bottom of it.
Advertising
Business promote themselves in many ways, but generally there is a few dominate avenues that are employed commonly in each industry. Typically a low cost option is best at first, especially for a small business. If you have the time to advertise directly, going face-to-face and approaching members of your target market directly can be a highly personal but confronting.
Letter drops, personally addressed approaches to business, Internet advertising like Google Adwords, the list goes on. Trust your instincts about what will work best for your business. When you are beginning an advertising campaign be prepared to give it a reasonable go. Invest a reasonable amount of money into the advertising and track it's success. If it brings in more than is costs, then you get to multiply.
Multiplying
Once everything is underway and profitable, and easy way of expanding and making things work even better is available. You simply multiply your current efforts in areas of your business. This doesn't necessarily involve extra hours required of you. Put simply, if having an employee allows your business to get paid more because you can do more business faster, than it is a financially beneficial business move.
While multiplying your available labour is one way to multiply your business, it applies in many other areas. If you were getting your clients from a small advertisement in a magazine, multiplying the frequency or size of the ad could multiply your clients. Basically, take what you are doing successfully now and multiply the system.
Diversifying
So you're started and looking towards being established in your business and traveling well. Life is good. Your bank balance, customer base, and business assets are growing. So what now?
You need to consider what could happen if for one reason or another thing start to turn down. How long could you survive working the business if the profits started turning into losses through lack of customers or an unforeseen circumstance arising? Diversification is essential.
If you're serious about working for yourself, your not in this for the short term. Take your existing business and run it better every day, but also keep watching, learning, and product idea gathering. Starting to see a theme here?
Look for potential new business, especially in a different industry or different area of your industry. Business men that do this take insurance against not only a downturn in one of their businesses, but a whole industry downturn. Just like you would balance your stocks in the stock market, you balance your own businesses.
Taxation
This one's easy - get a professional to do the lot. For a small business the costs are minimal, and the amount they can save you in current and future taxation easily exceeds the initial cost. One quote I love from Donald Trump is simple = "Why would anyone pay more tax than is legally required of them?". Unless you are a professional tax expert already, they will save you / make you money legally and consistently.
Some taxation consultants offer bookkeeping services as well. These are perfectly reasonable places to have your bookkeeping done, and will provide them an insight into all of your possible deductions and options. Alternatively (and what I do), is look for a professional bookkeeper who freelances or does weekend jobs to supplement their income.
